CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

REUNION

Castien Varic continued through the Frostfall, feeling the light snow fall on his shoulders.

Elric walked beside him, explaining the various techniques that he had either developed himself or been taught by his Whisperer. He spoke from behind the scarf that covered his face, but Castien could still hear him decently well.

The slight depression surrounding them was more of a small gully than anything else, Castien supposed. They knew that they were in the general area of the Blood Sorcerers’ fortress, but they still had no idea how they were actually going to find it. All they could see out here was mountain, after mountain, after mountain.

Castien nodded, suddenly aware of his breathing. He synced it with his heartbeat and continued walking. “How did you do it?” Castien asked, breaking the silence. “How did you stop these anxiety attacks?”

Elric turned to him. “It takes a lot of time to get to where I am today,” Elric said. “It is unfortunate, but it is true. Although you have the power to reach this position—everyone does—it takes a little practice.”

“Alright, so tell me what I need to practice,” Castien prodded.

Elric laughed. “Well, for starters, I think that it may help if you understand what is happening to you first. I know you’re eager to learn how to fight it, but learning about the nature of what is happening within your body can be just as beneficial as the techniques to combat it.”

“I’m terribly sorry, I couldn’t help but overhear you,” Arthion said, drifting from the front of the group toward the back.

Ilyana stayed at the helm, guiding them through the midday Frostfall.

They were taking turns at the front of the group, where they were tasked with being on the lookout for any stones with red painted on them.

“If you are talking about what happened at the inn a few days ago, I remember that,” Arthion said, joining in on their conversation. “As a Whisperer, I know more than most about the nature of the human mind, though I didn’t receive as much training for dealing with personal issues as others of my station. Perhaps I can offer my advice in addition to Commander Knyvet’s?”

“That would be appreciated. Thank you, Arthion,” Elric said, his goggles twisting slightly to reveal a smile in the eyes beneath.

Castien looked to the Whisperer, finding himself with a sudden appreciation for the man. Arthion had put aside his distrust for Castien and Ilyana for the sake of uncovering the truth, and now he was even helping Castien overcome his struggles. Not many men of his position would be strong enough, nor wise enough, to recognize that some things are greater than simple duties and loyalty.

Castien looked up to the surrounding mountaintops, gazing at their peaks with a sense of awe and curiosity. They towered over him. Snow fell over their sides in drifts, pushed by the strong winds of the peaks.

A shadow seemed to appear at the top of the mountain.

Castien squinted. Atop the ridge nearest to him, there had been a slight silhouette.
